“Real possibility of volcanic eruption”

The Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Monitoring Center (CIVISA) warned that “there is a real possibility of a volcanic eruption” in São Jorge, but “there is no evidence that it is imminent”.

In a status report published on its website, CIVISA says it has concluded “that the tectonic structures where the historic eruptions of 1580 and 1808, and the seismovolcanic crisis of 1964, in the fissural volcanic system of the herds, have been reactivated”.

“CIVISA warns of the possibility of earthquakes that may reach magnitudes greater than those recorded so far, as well as the danger of landslides potentiated by seismic activity”.

However, and according to CIVISA, the campaign to measure gases and temperature in the ground, which has been carried out since the beginning of this crisis, “in the epicentral zone has not, to date, led to the identification of any anomaly”.

CIVISA also adds that “field investigations” will continue “to take place in the coming days”.

Within the framework of geodetic monitoring, CIVISA, in collaboration with other entities, “strengthens the observation network based on GNSS stations and the processing of satellite images”.

According to CIVISA, the seismovolcanic crisis that has been occurring since the afternoon of March 19 in the central part of the island of São Jorge, in a sector between Velas and Fajã do Ouvidor, “continues above the reference values” .

The institution specifies that throughout Sunday “the preliminary analysis of the seismic recordings made it possible to count approximately 389 events”, which denotes “a downward trend” compared to Saturday.
