No budget? This is no problem for Scotland’s premier social media film festival; A “Swedish” smartphone film challenge planned for the unusual XpoNorth festival

XpoNorth launches Scotland’s first social media film festival.

XpoNorth, an organization supporting the creative economy of the Highlands and Islands, has partnered with some of Scotland’s biggest brands and organizations to launch Scotland’s first social media film festival.

The weeklong festival kicks off Sunday, June 6 and invites budding filmmakers to submit remakes of classic movie scenes, filmed on their smartphones and using household items to create sets, props and costumes. Also known as the “Swedish” film – a term first made famous by Jack Black in the 2008 hit film, Be Kind, Rewind – aspiring filmmakers will only have 24 hours to create a music video. ‘one minute and upload it to TikTok using the hashtag XpoCreates.

Brands that issue a film challenge throughout the week and offer exclusive prizes include tablet maker Mrs Tilly’s; Graham’s the family dairy; tasty Millions small fluffy candies; Cairngorms National Park; Venue for the Fringe festival, Pleasance Edinburgh; trade body, Screen Facilities Scotland; BAFTA winner Blazing Griffin, Glasgow-based digital entertainment company; and Hood Magazine.

Swedish film experts and founders of California-based Swede Fest Roque Rodriguez and Bryan Harley will host a How to Swede masterclass on Saturday May 22, giving their tips and tricks for creating a truly original and fun Swedish film.
