Last week we invited the three general election candidates for the Chamber of Delegates race for the 49th arrondissement to write an article explaining why our readers should vote for them next Tuesday (November 2).

Here is Alfonso Lopez’s unedited answer:

It has been an incredible honor to serve our community at the Virginia House of Delegates for the past ten years. During this time, I hope you and I do believe that our Commonwealth has changed dramatically for the better.

When I was first elected by my neighbors and the citizens of 49e District, I am committed to being a champion of our values in Richmond. I pledged to fight to improve our schools, protect our environment, increase funding for transport / transportation, expand healthcare, empower small businesses, improve economic development, protect workers, increase employment opportunities , protect immigrants and new Americans, create more affordable housing, build our social safety net, take sensible measures to prevent gun violence, and address issues of social and economic justice. Simply put, I promised to work tirelessly to build a Commonwealth that uplifts everyone and leaves no one behind.

Working with my colleagues, I am proud to say that I have kept my promises to you.

When I was first elected, Republicans held the governor’s residence, the State Senate, and they had a veto-proof qualified majority in the House. During this time, they remained the “NO Party”, regularly defeating efforts to protect the environment, expand health care, protect workers, reform the criminal justice system, support teachers and adopt safety measures. for firearms. Instead, they pushed for radically invasive policies like transvaginal ultrasound scans, tried to facilitate a school book ban, and used the power of the attorney general’s office to target immigrant communities. This unfortunate list of policy initiatives could go on and on.

Fortunately, Democrats built a coalition of voters across Virginia who took over the governorship and then the General Assembly. And look at the amazing things the Democrats in Virginia have been able to achieve in recent years:

  • Medicaid extension, which has provided life-saving medical coverage to more than 500,000 Virginians.
  • Reproductive Health Protection Act, which repealed decades of restrictions that made it extremely difficult to access abortion care in the Commonwealth.
  • Major criminal justice reforms, including the prohibition of arrest warrants, the strangulation and militarization of local police services. Virginia became the first southern state to abolish the death penalty. The General Assembly also passed my legislation authorizing the Attorney General to investigate and act against police services with a history of constitutional rights violations.
  • Virginia Clean Economy Act, which transformed Virginia from one of the worst states for climate change to one of the best and set us on the path to 100% renewable energy conservation.
  • Virginia Voting Rights Act, the first of its kind in the South, and major expansions in voter access and early voting opportunities.
  • Free community college for low and middle income students in high demand fields, in addition to significant reforms, I have championed expanding access to tuition and financial aid from universities to Dreamers.
  • Common sense gun violence prevention measures, such as universal background checks and a warning law to keep firearms out of the reach of people who pose a threat to themselves or to others.

This is just a glimpse of all the ways the Democrats in Virginia fought to move the Commonwealth forward and make it a better place for all.

Unfortunately, instead of moderating their approach, Republicans in Virginia have only embraced Donald Trump’s far-right message and movement more. Indeed, we have seen campaign after campaign where Republicans relied on racist dog whistles to advocate with Virginians, rather than policies that would benefit us all.

Rest assured, if the Virginia Republicans regain control of Richmond, they plan to undo any progress we’ve made. Plus, they are already planning to push a litany of far-right legislative initiatives, including ugly and confrontational restrictions on voting rights and Texas-style abortion restrictions.

With that in mind, I ask you to vote for the Virginia Democrats from top to bottom in the ballot. Terry McAuliffe, Hala Ayala, and Mark Herring need your support to fight Trump-style policies and continue our sensible and progressive reforms in Virginia. Please vote!

Together, let’s continue to build a Virginia that uplifts everyone and leaves no one behind.

My name is Alfonso Lopez and I ask for your support and VOTE on Election Day, Tuesday November 2nd. www.AlfonsoLopez.org
