States that have not reduced VAT on gasoline and diesel are Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Punjab, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Delhi .

The price of gasoline in Delhi, after the reduction of excise duties, amounts to Rs 103.97 per liter and diesel to Rs 86.67. In Chennai, the price of gasoline has been reduced to Rs 101.40 / liter while diesel costs Rs 91.43.

All States and Union Territories (UT) led by the National Democratic Alliance have reduced value added tax (VAT) on vehicle fuel since November 4, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a reduction excise duties on gasoline and diesel of Rs 5 and Rs 10 respectively.

A total of 18 states and 6 Union Territories (UTs) have reduced state taxes on gasoline and diesel in response to Prime Minister Modi’s call for states to reduce fuel VAT to relieve the common man. States that have reduced VAT are Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, Goa, Assam, Uttarakhand , Sikkim, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Biju Janata Dal-ruled Odisha. Six Union Territories – including Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu – have also reduced VAT on fuel.

The States and Union territories which did not respond favorably to the Prime Minister’s appeal are Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Punjab, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Jharkhand , Chhattisgarh and Delhi.

The price of gasoline in Delhi, after the reduction of excise duties, amounts to Rs 103.97 per liter and diesel to Rs 86.67. In Chennai, the price of gasoline has been reduced to Rs 101.40 / liter while diesel costs Rs 91.43. In Mumbai, gasoline now costs Rs 109.98 per liter and diesel Rs 94.14. In Kolkata, gasoline is priced at Rs 104.67 and diesel at Rs 89.79.

Gujarat, Manipur and Assam reduced VAT by Rs 7 per liter while Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka said that with a significant reduction in VAT, made worse by the reduction in excise duties, fuel prices in their states have fallen by Rs 12 per liter each.

Under fire from the constant rise in fuel prices, the Center reduced on November 4 (Diwali) the excise duties on gasoline and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 respectively. Central excise duties and state taxes like VAT have played a significant role in soaring fuel prices since May 2020, when reduced revenue from other sources due to the COVID lockdown forced governments to seek other sources of revenue. Excise duties on gasoline and diesel increased by Rs 13 per liter and Rs 16 per liter respectively last year, which drastically increased fuel prices. Several states have also increased VAT on fuel to offset losses suffered as part of lower goods and services tax collections. Increase in VAT consisting of a supplement of something between Rs 5 and Rs 17 on both fuels.
